How to Fix the Hal dll Error Message

At some point, you might have noticed an error message on your computer that looks something like this: "missing or corrupt hal.dll."

So what is the hal.dll? The hal.dll file is a file that Windows XP uses in order to correspond with your computer's hardware. It is also a hidden file. Unfortunately, it can become corrupted, damaged, and even deleted which can really cause problems for your computer.

Hal dll can become damaged and corrupted for a multitude of reasons. Fortunately, restoring the missing file using the Recovery Console doesn't have to be complicated, even if you don't consider yourself to be a computer person.

It should take you only about 15 minutes to restore the missing, damaged, or corrupted file. This is, of course, if you use the Windows XP original CD.

First, you must enter the Windows XP Recovery Console.

Then, when you get to the command line prompt, you should type expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32 and then hit "enter."

Next, if your system asks you to overwrite the file, press "Y."

Now, take the Windows XP CD out and type "exit." You can then hit "enter" to restart your computer, which you will need to do in order to see the changes that you have made take effect.

If the hal dll was the only problem, then Windows XP should start back up just fine and you shouldn't have any more issues as far as that is concerned.

Sometimes, you will receive the error after you have installed Internet Explorer 8. If you recently did this, then try uninstalling IE8 and then restarting your computer. This might take care of your problem on its own without having to do anything else.

Lastly, always remember to back-up your files! Any time that you reinstall Windows XP or any other Windows program, you are essentially clearing off your hard drive and starting over. You will lose any files and programs that you previously installed. That means you should have copies of any documents, pictures, or music files that you have stored on your computer. It's a good idea to invest in an external hard drive to back your files up onto from time to time to help alleviate this problem.

It is possible that you are experiencing the error message due to a damaged hard drive. If you try the above procedure and it doesn't work, then you might want to take your computer to a specialist if you, yourself, don't feel comfortable going any further with it.
